Dear Bayside Families,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to you today with an important update regarding a situation that has come to our attention here at Bayside Charter School. As you know, we strive to maintain a healthy and safe environment for all of our students, families, and staff, and we take any potential health concerns very seriously, which is why I am writing today to inform you of a situation that we are currently dealing with.
WE HAVE HAD MULTIPLE CONFIRMED CASES OF HEAD LICE in two of our classrooms in the lower grades. I want to be very clear that head lice is not a sign of poor hygiene and can happen to anyone, especially children of school age, as they often have close head-to-head contact with their classmates and friends during the course of a normal school day.
We are working closely with the school nurse and following all of the recommended protocols set out by the CDC and the NYC DOH on this matter. The nurse has done head checks in the affected classrooms and we will be doing additional head checks tomorrow if you give us permission.
Please check your child's hair tonight. If you find live lice or nits (which are the eggs), please keep your child home and treat them. The most common treatment is an OTC medication available at any pharmacy though there are also a number of home remedies that some parents prefer. Once your child has been treated and is nit-free they can return to school.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IF THEY HAVE LICE. We will need a note from a parent or guardian saying that the child has been treated before they can return to the classroom.
Also as a reminder, please send a hat and a hair tie if your child has long hair, this can reduce the risk of transmission.
If you have any questions, please reach out to the school nurse Ms. Garcia or to me directly. We will provide an update by the end of the week with more information. I want to thank you for your partnership in keeping Bayside a healthy and welcoming community.
Thank you,
Principal Henderson
